PVD, November 1999 Run Report

Pictures & Story by Jesse "Stomp" May

I was able to get Friday, the 12th, off, so I used that day to get the Jeep and the BIG trailer ready. After picking up my daughter from school, we left for Panamint Valley (3:00 PM). At about 9:00 PM we arrived at the Panamint Valley Camp; Traffic was really bad on the 91 and 15. First thing I heard at camp was that I WAS going to lead Stone Canyon run as Frank had a broken Jeep. After I mentioned that I didn't know where that canyon is located, it was decided to get someone else. I then got the travel trailer leveled and got the Jeep safety checked. Gary arrived about 12:00 and we got him set up. We both decided to do Stone Canyon, Saturday.

Saturday morning was clear and chilly. Both Gary and I was ready to go… We left on time for the Canyon. Once we got off the black top, the group aired down and we started up the canyon. Before the main canyon, we went up a wash and had a little fun. I gut stuck when my back tire fell off a rock, so I had to get tugged backwards. Also in that same wash Gary got a slice in the front tire. (Hurray for Safety Seal coming to the rescue again). Once we got out of the wash we headed for the canyon and the first of 4 waterfalls.

Waterfall #0:

This waterfall had a bypass so which I used. The vehicles that were totally locked up usually tried the falls. Gary attempted it but just could not get the grip, so he had to do a little different path to his left.

Now it was onto the next falls.

Waterfall #1:

This waterfall is big… Only one vehicle made it up. And let's just say a lot of speed helped… (unfortunately I was not able to see it). Both, Gary and I had to be winched up.

Waterfall #2:

Gary attempted it first. He had a little problem with his first attempt, but the second attempt he made it up. I took a different path and had to really work at it.

Waterfall #3:

We both went up it without any problems. This one is taller then fall #1, but nowhere close to being as hard. This fall is more like a Moab rock.

After Gary and I finished the last falls we both decided to do some more wheeling. On the way out we both agreed to go out to Lookout Point. While we were out there we did some mine explorations. The view from there was great with camp way out in the distance as shown in the middle of the picture below.

Back at camp we went for the sweepstakes. I had received money from two other people to put in for them so I went and got 120 tickets in each color. The blue one was for Dan D, pink for Travis S. and the red was mine. Each color group received a prize. Also some of my luck rubbed off onto Gary. But the biggest prize (Warn 8274-50 winch) was won by the red ticket. MINE.

Sunday I went home and Gary played more before heading home.

Thanks to Warn and all donors. And also thanks to the PVD committee.
