Arizona Itinerary - October 21-23, 2005

ARIZONA RUN – PRESIDENTS CHOICE

Date:
Friday 10/21 – Sunday 10/23  (Trail Run is on Saturday 10/22)

Trail Boss: Sheldon Neal

We are planning on driving out early Friday morning to the campground.  Contact Sheldon if you would like to caravan with us.   We will arrange a meeting place and time.

Trail Boss Camping?  Yes

Campground information:  La Paz County Park campground -- 7350 Riverside Dr. Parker AZ.  La Paz is located 8 miles north of Parker on Highway 95 along the Colorado River.  Telephone is 928.667.2069.  There are full hookups for RVs.  Cost: $16 per night.  Campsites are first-come, first-serve.  Let us know if you are coming and we will ‘save’ campsites by moving vehicles onto them.   They won’t let us actually pay for the campsite until you arrive.

Directions:  Take I-10 East to Arizona.  At Quartzsite AZ take Exit 17 toward US-95.  At .2 miles turn LEFT onto I-10 BL/US-95.  After .1 mile turn RIGHT to stay on  I-10 BL/US-95.  After 1.4 more miles turn LEFT onto N Central Blvd/AZ-95.   Go 35 miles to Parker on AZ-95.  In Parker, turn RIGHT onto Riverside Drive/AZ-95.  Go 7.8 miles and turn LEFT onto Golf Course Drive.   Then RIGHT at .2 miles on AZ-95 BL.  La Paz County Park is .4 miles further on your LEFT.

Other Lodging (i.e. motels) is available in nearby Parker (8 miles south) or Lake Havasu City (approximately 25 miles north).

Meeting Location for Saturday Run:
La Paz County Park campground.  It is less than 5 miles to the trailhead from camp.

Meeting Time: 8:00 am, leaving at 8:30am

Approx Duration of Run:  Half Day with any luck.  If time permits, we can run another trail.  The trail is only about 2.5 miles but took us 3 ½ hours on the pre-run with only 2 vehicles.

Degree Difficulty: 3½ - 4  (One section 4+ with no bypass)

Special Equipment Required:  Lockers and high clearance required.  Recommend 35” or larger tires due to the 4+ section.  33” tires may get by with a well-built vehicle, skilled driver and good spotting.  Body damage is possible in one particularly tough section (Hammers-like). Rocker panel protection, skid plates and body armor a must.  A winch would be handy (we needed it on the pre-run).

Terrain:  Ledges, moderate hills, a few off-camber sections, one very tough section with large boulders and a near vertical climb up a large rock hill toward the end.
